W1 - Smart Glasses for the Blind

What is blind? 

A blind person is a person who is visually impaired. Visually impaired people are mainly divided into three categories. According to the degree of visual impairment in the world, they are divided into B1 (totally blind), B2 (severe amblyopia, severe low vision) and B3 (slight amblyopia, slightly low vision).


Current Situasion

Whether in Malaysia or in other countries, there are many visually impaired people. They can't see the beautiful scenery, they can't see the people they love the most, and the mouths of the people around them are their eyes, but this is incomparable with the real feeling and witnessing.

Common assistive tools for the blind include crutches, talking watches and guide dogs (Figure 2). Crutches and talking watches can only help them identify directions and hear plane or literal words, but they cannot really see and help them avoid danger. As for guide dogs, guide dogs are trained by professional training institutions to accompany the blind and serve as their "eyes". However, there are very few guide dogs in Malaysia. This is due to the low acceptance of religion and people's sentiments, and there is no comprehensive guide dog school and related care training in the system. Still, none of these assistive tools can help the blind see the world with pictures and colors.


Future Vision

I was once in a tourist attraction in Pasar Seni, and I saw a blind man wanting to cross the road, but the green light button on the pedestrian traffic light was broken, so pedestrians traffic light would not be able to turn to the green light. Dad saw it and stepped forward to help the blind man cross the road. At that time, I was thinking that it would be great if there was a device that could allow the blind to see things.

I think that with the development of future technology, a pair of glasses with a concept like Figure 3 can appear. This pair of glasses can transmit the world seen by the glasses to the mind in real time in the form of graphic waves. Enabling the blind to see a world full of form and color through graphic information transmitted through glasses.

Although modern technology is still unable to realize glasses like the concept of Figure 3, but I believe that there will be a chance to realize it in the future. Because some companies have tried to make some glasses for the blind. For example, the Dutch startup Envision has cooperated with Google Glass (Google Glass) to develop smart glasses that can help blind and visually impaired people "hear" the surrounding environment (Figure Four). 

This is a pair of glasses that can help blind people live a normal life. Through the images captured by the camera, smart glasses can extract visual information from images of people, objects, public transportation, etc. through AI algorithms, and then describe the surrounding environment through earphone audio, so I think on the basis of this pair of glasses, there will be a chance to realize the concept of Figure 3 in the future.

Solution

Improving this product requires a lot of funds to promote it. In addition to funds, it also requires many talents to participate in this plan and constantly test and improve, but this is not a reason to hinder the birth of new products. 

I think relevant organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and other health organizations can implement investment promotion. They can conduct in-depth investigations on smart glasses for the blind and make a report and ppt on their ideas, so that businessmen from all walks of life around the world can see the prospects of this plan and returns so that they can be fully funded.


Secondly, the World Health Organization (WHO) or other relevant institutions can launch a recruitment campaign for the project to attract interested technical personnel from all over the world to participate in the project. For product technologists, creating a product environment that benefits people is their greatest achievement. After a series of professional screening, with enough talents, a research team can be formed to conduct research on smart glasses.

Lastly, we can use the opinions of people around the world. Sometimes different opinions can bring a lot of inspiration to technicians and find new directions for breakthroughs. We can create a webpage about the smart glasses project, so that interested people can see the vision of the project on the webpage, so that they can give more and better suggestions and methods.

Reflection
People with disablities are often a group that is ignored by society. I think no matter what country, it should provide more convenience for people with disabilities. Especially for the visually impaired, because they cannot see the world and can only recognize people and things by sound, so I choose this type of solution. I believe that in the next 30-40 years, technology will be more advanced than it is now, and it will be able to produce this type of products that help the blind so that they can see the world.
